Can I buy tools before I register as self employed...?

..and still claim these costs as expenses? I plan to start working as a sole-trader in a month but have started to buy equipment for my prospective business. I expect to spend �2000 on equipment which I will need for my business but I need to make sure that buying tools early won't invalidate claiming them as business expenses.
