I have a skull ring with an owl on its head that my father owned. Where could it have come from?

My father was in the Navy from 1948 to 1968. After he passed away, I was going through his stuff and found a skull ring with an owl on one side and a phoenix on the other. Does anyone have an idea as to where he could have picked it up in his naval travels? I know he went through Haiti, so I've assumed it came from there. But I can't find anything on the internet that even looks like it.
